A Little Bit About Me...

I was a Missionary in Panama for fourteen years. Learned Spanish through a two-year course in the country. As a missionary, I went on to teach Literacy and Bible to indigenous peoples there. After coming home stateside, although not certified, I earned extra income by giving classes in English to Hispanics in my home. I also taught English to monolingual Hispanics through an Afterschool program in Northeast Elementary, Jackson, MI. I worked as a Paraeducator in Northeast Elementary, as a General Education Paraeducator, but I often subbed for regular ESL teacher aides in the classroom. My approach is learner-centered, which means that I see each student as an individual and strive to tailor our instructional exchange to meet the needs of each person. I believe that teaching is dialogic; it is through dialogue that instructors and students together engage in the exploration process that leads to learning. In my career in automotive plastics, I coached or taught manufacturing principles to improve quality and efficiency. My demonstrated success is due in part to my efforts to educate and coach operators, engineers and managers to understand the basic principles of chemistry, math and engineering to buy into a logical course of action.
