I am a recent graduate of Drury University. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Cum Laude. I have been tutoring mostly college students for the last 2 years, while in school. I specialize in Algebra, but have the ability to help with any type of math class. In addition to college students, I have also helped elementary students.
I enjoy helping those who struggle with math. After working with a diverse group of students, age 10 to 55, I try to develop a unique teaching method with each person. Some people are more visual, others auditory, and some have math anxiety. After pin-pointing the specific struggles, I can better help the student acheive success.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience as a teacher has shown me the importance of an open mind and a thoughtful response. I believe learning comes out of asking questions. It is the instructor's job to encourage thoughtful questions. To do this, the student must be made to feel at ease around the teacher and confident enough to ask the questions they really need answered to succeed. If a student is ridiculed for asking a "stupid" question there is less chance of that student asking questions in the future and less chance of the student succeeding in a course.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that everyone can learn with enough effort. However approaching the material in a way that makes sense to the student is key to allowing the student to understand new ideas. I like to think of new and creative ways to explain ideas to students and am patient and considerate when I teach. I believe in the value of every student and strive to instill self-confidence. I think that teachers have an incredible opportunity to improve the lives of the students they teach. I desire to not only teach students new ideas and skills, but give them the tools to be an active learner.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in a teaching approach that takes into consideration each child's unique culture. Not only is culturally appropriate teaching beneficial, it's necessary! I plan to implement interactive learning and integrate curriculum. In doing so, I am providing the student with possible ways to connect previous knowledge with the new content they are learning. I will present my students with the opportunity to learn in an environment containing differentiated instruction. In this way, I hope to find what methods are most efficient with each individual. This in turn will teach the student which methods work best for them, therefore increasing their ability to teach themselves.
Throughout my college experience, I have had multiple chances to volunteer as a classroom aide, tutor, and student teach. As I am certified to teach grades K through 8, I have taken college courses in all subject ... read more

I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.
As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating college in California, I returned to Portland to continue my education in mathematics at Portland State University. I began tutoring mathematics to high school students privately. My students found incredible success. Several went from C students to A students in all of their classes, not only math classes. It seems once their confidence shot up in math, it did so in the other classes as well. Eventually my reputation spread, and I started tutoring almost 30 hours a week, and even more during finals. I also tutored at an afterschool program at a high school, and was given the honor of the intensive program, which was only offered to one math tutor and one english tutor. I found myself also being an advisor to some of the other tutors. I have an incredible ability to read students and tell how much of the material they understand.

Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University. The years at St. John's have given me the unusual ability to tutor students in Ancient Greek. They laid a foundation in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus which the years of Engineering built up further. At the high school and college level I am also currently able to tutor Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Psychology and Anthropology.
My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student mu ... read more

Here is Some Good Information About Trigonometry Tutoring

Where do you turn when the angles don't make sense, cosines seem like co-signs, and every time you try to study trigonometry you go off on a tangent? Select your tutor today to help understand the ratio of the side opposite the angle to the hypotenuse. sin A = opposite/hypotenuse = a/c. Okay who thinks that has something to do with sins, dating or air conditioning? You have come to the right place. Trig is used in astronomy, geography, satellite navigations systems and other disciplines to pinpoint a location with increased accuracy to allow further action to be taken. Help understanding how this applies is available when you select your tutor today.
