To the extent that I can, I tailor my teaching to the individual needs of the student. Typically, after assessing the student’s writing and discussing what he or she perceives to be their strength and weakness as a writer and determining what his or her goals are in terms of improving their writing, I proceed to develop a curriculum or plan that I believe will enable the student to achieve the goals we have mutually agreed upon. I am a firmly believe that good writers are made and not born; therefore, it is only through persistent practices that writing skills improve.
I have extensive experience teaching writing to a diverse group of students. After graduating from Indiana University with a BA in English, I taught high school English in East Lansing Michigan from 1988 until 1991. Students learn to write by writing (and by reading). I have used a number of different text books but I find that students learn best when writing about something that matters to them. My approach to tutoring, then, would be to find out what a student truly cares about and start from there. In addition, I would begin by taking a diagnostic writing sample in order to see what mechanical issues seemed most important to address. I would never attempt to tutor a student with some kind of formulaic, standardized regimen of study but would work my hardest to tailor tutoring sessions to the individual needs of each student.
