I taught debate and public speaking at Carroll College from 2000 until 2002 and briefly assisted the University of Montana debate program during the 2003 academic year. Both positions required hands on instruction in the basics of rhetorical theory as well as extensive research and writing. A good instuctor is able to separate theory from practice (in any academic discipline) and reassemble them so the student has a broad understanding of both components. I believe that students truly understand ideas and processes when they discover them independently; rote memorization does not instill thinking skills. To be a well-rounded academic, students must learn to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to work through problems and issues based on broad concepts and rules. Pupils must learn and memorize certain rules and concepts as a matter of course, but it is the ability to take these ideas and apply them to many topics, often with help and guidance, that makes a true critical thinker. I have educated both college and middle school students, and through these experiences I learned that the key to effectively teaching others is patience. I guide my students but do not do the work for them. Most students have the ability to learn the material being instructed to them.
