My comments on tutoring GRE : Subject test - chemistry

Teaching is a vital to any academic career. My goal as a teacher is to effectively communicate the subject matter in an interesting way to the student in order to create an atmosphere conducive to learning. I would use number of methods such as in-class participation, demonstration-Supplemented Lectures, development of internet resources and research papers to clearly convey principles relevant to the chemistry classes I would teach. In addition, through the feed back from students and peers, I will continually strive to improve my teaching abilities. Adjustments in style and resources will constantly be made in order to achieve the objectives set forth earlier.
I was offered a fellowship by the Graduate School of City University of New York on the basis of my GRE (chemistry) scores soon after I have completed BS degree in chemistry with physics as the minor at University of Per ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

While pursuing an undergraduate program in Biology, I was fortunate to join the peer mentoring program at my school. As a peer mentor, I tutored in General Chemistry 1 and 2 for two years. I made counseled and guarded my peers in my area of study I also tutored in calculus 1 for a program by the division of science called City College Academic for Professional Preparation (CCAPP). I later tutored in statistics for the premedical office at my school.
I love teaching because it provides an opportunity for both teacher and student to learn new things. I also believe that by applying appropriate teaching styles, the most difficult subject can be very easy to the students. I believe in getting students involved in their studies by making it fun. A child needs to study but must have fun whilst studying. My objective is to provide good educational approach to ensure that my students are t ... read more

I am a Massachusetts certified teacher of mathematics for grades 5-12, and have four years combined experience as a teacher and tutor of mathematics and language arts. My experience includes training at the Huntington learning center of Acton Massachusetts, where I became well versed in strategies for improving performance on standardised tests, especially the SAT. I have also taught for two years at Marlborough High School, where I worked in classrooms with students who had various learning disabilities, from ADD to autism.
My teaching style is based first and foremost upon engagement. I feel that it is absolutely critical for the successful instructor of any subject to have a passion for that subject that is evident in the way he or she interacts with students. A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that I excel in putting myself in the student's shoes. By trying to understand their thought process, I can best teach by making sure the student follows the logic of the subject. I have always believed that allowing the student to reach understandings through subtle guidance by the teacher is the best process. This method allows students to retain information better and feel more comfortable with the material.
I have always enjoyed both the humanities and sciences. At Virginia Tech, I majored in Philosophy and Minored in Statistics and Business. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is to review the fundamentals. If I find deficiencies, I address these first. I then introduce the subject core using applications that the student can relate to. I get students to participate in solving problems by working through the steps in turn. I keep track of student preparation for accreditation by giving home work assignments. I keep notes on lessons and student progress. While offering words of encouragement, I keep the student informed about the progress and indicate that there is still time for excellence.
As an Engineering major I tutored students in Math for 2 years to pay for my education. I love to teach by examples and the students walk away with a solid understanding of the sciences. At its most basic core, education is the medium through which people may challenge themselves to think critically in new, creative ways so that they may develop better analytical and problem-solving skills. Learning is a process of discovery that is largely influenced by the attitude of a student and the approach to learning that is communicated by his or her teacher. I firmly believe that demonstrating enthusiasm, patience, persistence and constructive criticism are necessary for making progress with visible results in tutoring sessions; I strive to speak kindly and plainly, often drawing on analogies to communicate with students.

I believe the key to good teaching is understanding the subject from the student's perspective. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge. If a student struggles to understand something, the teacher has probably "skipped a step" somewhere, and omitted some piece of the puzzle that the student does not yet have. When that happens, the teacher should go back to a place of mutual understanding and take smaller steps, being careful to take nothing for granted. My teaching style is especially well suited to a tutoring environment. With a single student, there is all the time I need to find and empathize with ... read more
