Super tutor!

I place a high value on formal education and believe strongly in lifelong learning, for the betterment of the individual and, ultimately, for society. While raising three young children, I obtained my undergraduate degree in business administration. In later acquiring a law degree, I was introduced to the rigorous demands of such study and to the fascinating arena of reasoning and analytical thinking required by this discipline. I have tutored young children intermittenly over several years, with one stint of four years length as a Literacy Volunteer teaching English to children of war refugees.
I enjoy teaching and observing my students' different learning styles. I respect each student's individual method of assimilation. I work hard to accommodate his or her particular needs. I delight in the dynamics of the classroom and strongly believe that I can make a difference in whether ... read more

I have earned a bachelor’s degree in History and English, as well as a master’s degree in teaching. My educational background has given me a wide range of knowledge in the humanities, and my liberal arts education has helped me develop high reading and writing skills. I have four years of experience running writing workshops and tutoring first-year college students and non-native English speakers in study skills. From these experiences, I have gained expert knowledge in teaching literacy and study skills. Also, from my time teaching at a public high school, I am very familiar with the types of expectations teachers have of students and can help students "crack the code" of multiple choice, short answer, and research assignments and tests.
My teaching philosophy and style is founded upon the belief that all children are brilliant and can succeed. My approach to teaching is highly in ... read more

I have twelve years experience teaching students from 2nd to 5th grade. My first six years were spent teaching 2nd grade at Caroline Brevard and Florida State University Schools. Then, I taught Math to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade for one year at FSU Schools using the Project CHILD method which involved many hands on centers with whole group and small group instruction. After that, I was a Reading Coach for Crawfordville Elementary for one year and then taught 4th grade for three years. I currently work at Riversink Elementary teaching 3rd grade. I have worked there since they opened in the fall of 2007. As an Elementary teacher I have experience teaching Reading, Writing, Grammar, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Learning needs to have importance to a student. They need to understand why they need to learn the things they are being taught. Then it makes more sense to them. If possible, teach to their strengths. If they like computers, find a website that gives them practice. If they are better writers than listeners, have them dictate and read it back to you. Flashcards work well for some while others have difficulty remembering things. It all depends on the strengths of that child as to what is the best way to teach.
I have taught kindergarten through eighth grade special education for the last twenty years. I have had experience working with students who were struggling learners including my own child. Sometimes teaching means showing a different way to do it. I have learned the skills needed for students to learn and remember what they have learned. I have tutored many students ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a special needs teacher, I have worked with many students who simply needed someone to show them a different way to learn the material. Learning can be made so much easier when taught in a format that is fun. This makes it enjoyable and more likely to be remembered. In a tutoring one-on-one kind of setting, times tables could be taught with a deck of cards and using the two numbers thrown out as the problem. Reading and writing can be done by taking pictures and creating a story from the pictures you have taken. It costs the price of a throw away camera and the students love it. I bleieve learning must be fun.
I am a very patient, soft spoken person who understands what it is like to struggle. I also had difficulty learning in school and wish someone would have taken the time to notice I wasn't being 'lazy' but really had a hard time comprehending and remembering what I r ... read more

As a college graduate I understand the importance of education. During my college career I was given the opportunity to travel to Darmstadt, Germany where I was a camp counselor to children's whose parents are in the military. During this time I was given the opportunity to tutor and mentor young military children. It was my goal to help each student understand the fundamentals of reading and writing. As a pre law student, I was able to strengthen my research and writing skills. I interned at the Florida Legislature and a law office. Reading and writing is my passion and I would love to help others foster that same love.
Understanding is a priceless gift. It is my ultimate goal to ensure that every student I help gets an understanding of what they are learning. I believe that my patience coupled with my desire to see a student succeed is what drives me to teach and mentor. I am con ... read more

I've been told that I have a unique style of teaching. I like to teach using rhymes, antonyms, and relating the subject to familiar life situations. My experience with this style of teaching seems to help students retain information better while simultaneously enjoying the process. I try to incorporate fun into the learning process and always commend students for achieving their goals. Many times I offer incentives for improving grades or improved test scores/progress reports. I try to make the tutoring process enjoyable for both me and the student, while also making sure the student learns as much as possible in each session.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher/tutor, I find that being a good listener and paying attention to students needs creates a successful learning environment. Every child acquires information differently and their ways of learning should be respected. By creating lessons based on exciting, "real world" applications, students are more accepting to the content at hand.
I graduated from Florida State University in 2004 with a B.A. in Spanish and Italian with a minor in French. I have been tutoring with the Modern Language Department since 2001 and tutor in all three languages. I also spent a month in Spain teaching English to native Spanish speakers. As an undergraduate, I was involved with the America Reads program, where I was a reading coach/language arts tutor to elementary and middle school children. I am also qualified in tutoring basic math and college prep math.

While passing the FCAT is obviously one component of improving your child’s skills, this class is focused on going beyond what is expected by the FCAT. I want to encourage creative expression through different styles of writing, and I want them to develop a love for reading, or at least find a few books that they absolutely can’t stop reading. To engage students in the books they are reading, I will incorporate hands-on activities throughout the reading. These activities will help them become active readers, while engaging them in the stories. Each semester, the students will do a book report on a book they must be reading at home, independently of class time. They will have the opportunity to choose their own book for the book report, as long as it is slightly above their reading level.

I really like individualized teaching and prefer to work in small groups or one-on-one. I believe in providing multiple teaching methods to include all learning styles. I do my best to make my lessons relatable and enjoyable. I feel very comfortable around all sorts of students, especially those with disabilities. I am very friendly and patient. I have always found myself adept at teaching. I have a great deal of patience and a genuine fondness for instruction. As a journalism major from UF, I gained extensive writing, research and grammatical skills. I am a proficient typist and have an intimate knowledge of computers and various programs. I am grounded in functional math: an essential skill in reporting on the economy and science. I went up to pre-calculus in high school and took both Algebra and Logic in college. Current events and history were both fundamental in my schooling. My recent tutoring history is not formal, but I have helped many students and peers edit papers, understand their math homework and prepare for tests.

I believe that to engage and educate children requires a personal, hands-on, and creative teaching style. I recognize that everyone learns differently. However, I believe that a child can learn anything if he/she sees the connection between the information and their daily life. I am patient and open-minded. I don't mind working hard for results. The best way to cover information is by showing all sides of it. I believe in developing trust within the teacher-student relationship. I try to make the learning environment as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
My experience with children and education are linked through my travels. I worked in a day care in Asheville North Carolina. I also volunteered at a mosque when I lived in London. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every student can learn if I can adequately gauge what their abilities and intelligences are. Utilizing the multiple intelligences theory, my first session with my student will be concentrating on getting to know them as a worker and a person. I feel their outside experiences have just as much contribution as their classroom experiences. Your child and I, during this first session, will conduct a meet and greet of sorts and I will then map out an education success plan for them. It's through their needs and their cognitive abilities that I feel any student can be successful, and become a productive member of society.

My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. I am a very patient person, and most of all, I consider myself empathetic. I believe that teaching is achieved through understanding each child's specific needs and emotions, and working through the difficulties with firm, but kind leadership.
