I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.
You will see from my resume below that I have strong experience in math, science, engineering and computers. It is worth mentioning that I am also skilled in english (5 on my AP World Lit exam) and art (voted most artistic in my senior high school class). I have also tutored at least 4 students in the past, and found it to be a successful and rewarding experience. Katharine P. Each student is unique. Therefore, I use a variety of teaching styles, strategies, methods and techniques depending on the individual's needs and abilities. A special needs student may need hands on lessons or visual learning activities. Someone else may be an audio learner. I analyze the situation, differentiate between teaching strategies and implement the most effective one. My success goes beyond the actual lessons or my experience. It's is due to the fact that I truly love teaching, thrive on the positive interactions and maintain high expectations for myself and the student. I am very flexible, patient and knowledgeable. I strive to meet the needs of the students in order for them to be successful and confident.

I love teaching children and being able to see them learn. It is awesome to see and hear when they finally "get it" or when they understand something that I taught them. Moreover, when a student gives you an answer to a question and uses an example of something that you taught them earlier, it really shows you how quickly they can pick things up. My teaching "style" is very open--I will have an outline and while I am presenting I will sometimes ask for examples from the students to help get us through the outline together. You can't speak AT them; you have to involve the students in what you are teaching them.
Just recently, I worked with students in New Berlin, WI as part of the Junior Achivement program. While in High School and College, I worked with students in Madison at Whitehorse Middle School on Video Editing, PC Repair, Postmodernism, and Music. I have extensive skills in ... read more

I have always been a reader and a writer. In my degree work, I learned how to inspire others to read critically and write well. I have many years experience as a college-level instructor. I also work locally with high school students at my church. In addition, I have worked at Writing Centers at several institutions. I also have helped with successful grant writing for several local organizations.
My classrooms involve learning-centered groups in a workshop approach. I find that students are encouraged by the examples of other writers and learners at their own levels. I provide a great deal of individual feedback on assignments. I encourage the imitation of examples in writing and the discovery of other writing styles. I am sensitive to the needs and learning needs of each student.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style spans two decades, and many hundreds of students. In that time, I have learned that individual students have individual learning styles. Therefore, my teaching style would be dependent upon the student and his or her needs and current state of mind. When possible, I favor a mastery method of teaching, attempting to focus on the essential elements of learning, and then building knowledge. Other situations may require a different approach. But regardless of the approach, the tutoring will be a success only through scheduled and careful collaboration with the student and parent, and I will work to build and maintain that communication.
I have taught and served as a principal at parochial schools for 15 years, teaching every subject in every level in grades 4-8, and English in grades 9-12. In addition, I have served as an adult educator for 6 years. My particular area ... read more

I believe that learning occurs through doing, particularly when it comes to writing. Students become better writers by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). There are obviously techniques to be taught and encouraged, but individual discovery is key. As a tutor, I believe that it is my responsibility to serve as a guide, keeping learners on track and pointing out opportunities for getting closer to the ideal.
As a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois University, I taught composition, primarily using popular culture as a topic for expository writing and developing critical thinking skills and techniques. More About This Tutor...

Mathematically, I teach from a logical, or procedural approach. As students work their way up to Calculus and further, it is important to understand the process of problem-solving and not focus on the numbers alone. Many sciences can become abstract, I like to relate topics to things students may encounter everyday or already understand in order to get a foundation before complicating topics with smaller detail. I am very positive and try to push students as fast as they absorb the information. I feel it is hard to enjoy a subject if you do not understand it or see how it effects you. For this reason, I try to bring real-world uses for topics and bring these subject to life.
