I am a huge advocate of learning 'why' something happens vs 'how' it happens. In mathematics, anyone can learn a formula, an expression, or an equation if they look at it enough times, but they would not know how to apply it in real life situations. However, if a students learns the application of the formula and how it works, bigger chances they will remember it or can derive it when recalling the information. Learning the 'why' WILL lead to learning the 'how'
I have excelled in mathematics going all the way back to elementary school. Studied general mathematics in college. Have tutored at least 20 students on a variety of subjects in math, outside of school involvement. Worked in the math tutor lab at CSU during enrollment. I have tutored students in middle school and below on general subjects also (i.e science, social studies, english, etc).

I greatly enjoy working with students to help them to understand subjects they are struggling with. I usually can find new ways to describe scientific concepts to students and I explain the general ideas behind mathematical concepts. When I tutor students I usually explain the first few problems and then I encourage the student to try to work the problems on their own. Through this method, students are able to practice the concepts while getting reinforcement when needed.

A Little Bit About Me...

In high school, I was the typical overachiever. I played varsity baseball, led many school organizations, and was at the top of my class. School, especially math subjects, came easy to me, but that is not the case with everyone. Therefore, I wanted to find a way to help students in these areas. During sophomore year, I was approached by high school administration to tutor students, on a one-on-one basis after school, on math subjects. It was an amazing opportunity because only four students out of the entire student body were picked for this highly-selective position. I enjoyed it so much that I continued doing so until I graduated from the high school 3 years later.
