My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught creative writing and poetry and am a published poet.

My instructional experience includes over 230 credit hours of composition and language arts instruction, including creative writing, literary analysis and Shakespeare. However, most of the instruction has been focused on composition. I developed a bachelor level English course for Pearson Education, working as a writer on a team of three; the course was deployed nationally at over 100 campuses.
Interactive! Students need to apply what they have learned, to reinforce the learning cycle.

All Things Writing!!!

Writing & Public Speaking are my niche. As a tutor, I have helped students at all academic levels (K-12, and beginner undergrad) I've recently discovered a joy for helping others learn and am currently a substitute teacher in Henrico County Public Schools. My current students are primarily at elementary, middle school and high school levels. Throughout my sessions I teach and emphasize the mechanics of writing. I also assist students in test preparation. Many parents want to prepare their children/students for the college or specialty center of their choice. So Essay Writing and Reading Comprehension are subject matters that I work on with students to help achieve those goals.
In Writing... I generally give my students a mild assessment to see how I can best help them. I also conduct all of my own lesson planning. However, I am certainly accustomed to helping students with cu ... read more

Specializing in Out-of-the-Box Thinking for All Learners

I love to incorporate art and sensory experiences into everything I do to really activate the brain. The "Drill and Kill" is very rarely appropriate, so I tailor every approach individually. What works for one student may not work with another. My formal training includes many intervention types and experience with multiple programs and curricula, so I have a large pool from which to draw...then we get creative! My style REALLY aims for those over-arching foundational skills like critical thinking, thought organization, and problem solving. I will also track and provide data to monitor progress and hold myself accountable for effectiveness.
Let's start out by saying I am definitely not your average tutor! Fun is vital to motivation, and I live on the stuff! I have been teaching for over fifteen years in a variety of environments, working in inclusive environments with children ... read more

I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. I have also provided SAT and AP preparation tutoring.
My instructional approach emphasizes interactivity, use of new technologies, and a positive, "we can do it" philosophy that acknowledges writing s a process that starts with the creation of ideas, moves to refinement and revision, and ends with emphasis on correctness. In this approach, students who find writing challenging often discover that an emphasis on writing freely and creatively along with a focus on critical thinking skills, is the fastest way to improved written content and technique.

My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.
Graduating with a 3.4 GPA in Mass Communications, I have always been creative in both design and writing. I have earned a dual BS in Mass Communications with the emaphasis being in both Public Relat ... read more

Teaching is what I was born to do, and I enjoy working with students of varying ages and abilities. Approaching difficult tasks or challenging assignments with new ideas or fresh techniques can make reluctant learners receptive. I am patient, but not a push over and I do require students to think and do their own work. However, I am able to do this with humor and positive encouragement. Working with a child's learning style and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of the learner is key to success in all educational endeavors.
After 17 years in the classroom, I still firmly believe that teachers are born and not made, and that all people should develop a love for life-long learning in whatever their career fields or passions may be. My loves do include reading and writing, but with advanced degrees in adult and vocational education and curriculum studies, I also enjoy ... read more

I love sharing my knowledge and helping others as a tutor, and I am fortunate now that my flexible work schedule allows me to continue this kind of teaching.
I am a patient, friendly, and fun individual. Like I tell my own children, I believe that teaching and learning is a two-way street. It's important for teachers to engage students, to help them discover, to guide them in their learning. There's a good deal of back-and-forth initially to determine a good learning program, and it takes con ... read more

I have worked with college students in the past, working with comprehensive learning and mathematics. I learned that each student understands in their own personal way; some learn by seeing something concrete and for others it is working through the steps in the problem that helps them understand. I have also had the experience of teaching a freshman seminar class where the focus was finding the students strong point or drive and having them research their major or likes to find what job fields might fit them well.
I love teaching all ages, but have experience working with college freshman. I believe that these students are at an age where they need to realize their dreams and need help to gain confidence within themselves. My strong point is within Math, but also comprehension. Written words and puzzles are not always easily understood. Some people need facts to help them learn o ... read more
