As an undergraduate at MIT, I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and have complete master of those taught at the high school level. I have also completed several advanced courses in chemistry, biology, and physics, but am still young enough to remember the techniques I used to learn those subjects when I myself was a high school student. I have prepared many students (privately) for final exams in biology, geometry, and algebra.
I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). Ever since I was in high school, I have always enjoyed working with children in a variety of situations. I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn.
