I love to incorporate art and sensory experiences into everything I do to really activate the brain. The "Drill and Kill" is very rarely appropriate, so I tailor every approach individually. What works for one student may not work with another. In this approach, students who find writing challenging often discover that an emphasis on writing freely and creatively along with a focus on critical thinking skills, is the fastest way to improved written content and technique.
I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all children can learn. A good teacher tries to find each child's individual learning style and accomodate lessons to match it. I also think learning should be fun, so I use a lot of games and other incentives. I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and have age and the experience of being the mother of two twenty-somethings on my side.
I taught in the Wright City RII School District for 26 years, at both high school and middle school level. During that time I taught everything from English and American literature to basic grammar and writing skills. I also taught some reading classes. I am interested in teaching writing and language arts skills to students. My style is to adapt to the skill level and interests of the student and to work toward their own goals, whether these are to write a personal essay for college, to learn to write better generally, or to develop better overall English skills so they can move on to the next grade in school.
I have 30 years journalism and communications experience and completed all course work for M.A. in journalism. I am the author or co-author of 14 books and hundreds of articles. I made a living as freelance writer for 15 years and had writing jobs on staff for about 15 years.
