I first determine the student's learning style so I have an idea what works for him or her. Learners who have experienced repeated failure need successful experiences to help build self-confidence; I start with what they can do successfully already. Knowing the individual's interests and talents helps me tie the topic to something important to the student, and to help them understand how the topic relates to their present and future lives. Finally, helping the individual understand how she or he learns is the key that will allow him or her to take control. Through my studies in Environmental issues and Landscape design, I have taken many writing-intensive classes, science courses and geography courses. As a graduate student, I spent significant time writing and focusing on grammatical topics of technical writing. Also, I have several years of experience working with young students as an educator. I taught with the Bangor adult education program in the early 1980's as a graduate student in educational psychology. I taught adults a variety of subjects math, English and GED preparation at that time. I also taught English as a Second language with them. I also hold a masters in education at the University of Maine at Orono that I have not listed in the formal education section. I reserved that section for relevant finance and accounting information. But having said that, I have a broad psychology and education background (I was a clinical counselor for 12 years)that goes along with my knowledge of finance and accounting theory.
