I am going to be a senior in college studying Civil Engineering, and am currently taking some time off to gain work and travel experience. I just returned from a year long trip around Australia and New Zealand, and this only confirmed my love of travel and exploration. I started tutoring in High School, as part of our "Link Leader" program. After my junior year in High School, I spent 8 weeks living in Nicaragua with a host family. My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students.
