Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a student does have a mental model then I will test its accuracy using the standard procedures approved and or recommended by the institution of enrollment. Further encounters are then simply for reinforcement until the student is confident.
