I enjoy working with students. It seems that, in most cases, tutoring is essentially a confidence-builiding exercise. Yes, it's anout instructional leadership, but it's more about showing a student they can really achieve what they're setting out to do. In working with students one needs to have the ability to connect with that student at their level of understanding. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off. I have 20+ years of real world business IT experience. Most of that was programming on IBM iSeries/AS400 mini computers in RPG or COBOL. I love the give and take of working with high school students. I relish hearing fresh, young opinions and seeing how they decide what they believe in and why. My style entails showing a student the relevance of what he or she is doing. It is important for a child to know WHY what they are supposed to be learning is so important; they need to know how it will help them years from now after the classes are over.
