Algebra I is one of my top subjects!

I find that it is best to begin by getting to know the student, introducing myself, being friendly, and maybe talking about shared interests. This normally occurs over several sessions, but is necessary to keep out the "just another teacher" perspective. While learning, it is important to build subject matter confidence. Since there are often mental blocks or preconceptions in place (particularly in math), I find it productive and beneficial to get students to understand and believe that the work is not impossible. This helps in the transition from "I can't do this." to "How do I do this?". The best way to get there is using a show-tell-do format, where I first demonstrate, talking through examples before guiding the student through examples, then finally giving the student examples to work through solo. My tutoring style is somewhat laid-back with serious undertones. I feel the best way to learn is to not have information force fed, but to allow the individual to glean knowledge and come to an understanding of the subject gradually. My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Most students find this subject easy once it is properly taught for understanding. Math facts must be mastered first, and We can do that quickly and easily with my programs.

I'm fairly laid back. I try to get to know the student first and see how they do with their work on their own and of course helping them out when needed. Occasionally, I'll give my own tests to see how well their test taking skills are and how they do under pressure. Once I get an idea of which area is their weak point, I'll prioritize the subjects so that more time is focused on their weak area whether it be reading, math, writing, or even just test taking skills. I also do a lot of fun logic puzzles to get them thinking and also creative writing projects so that they have a way to express themselves. I think it is very important for children to have a chance to break away from the standardized tests and be allowed to think outside the box starting at a young age.
