Flexible, down-to-earth -- I try to figure out how YOU learn best.
I am a retired college/university professor, and have been tutoring actively for the last six years (privately, as well as in a mentoring program at a community college). My tutoring experience has focused primarily upon mathematics, statistics, writing, Test Prep (e.g., ACT,SAT, GRE, math placement tests), chemistry and economics. Students have told me that I explain otherwise difficult material (especially in mathematics), in a down-to-earth and commonsense manner that makes sense intuitively.

Math & Test Prep Tutor

When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. After I graduated I got a job as a tutor working with high school students on preparation for college entrance exams and mathematics. I found that to be very rewarding.

Make learning fun and everyone wins! Not all children absorb material the same way. I try to explore different ways of presenting material and working through concepts to relate the material to something that can be understood.
I'm an environmental engineer who has been tutoring for the last 13 years. I enjoy working with children and excell at working with children who might be struggling with comprehension or who have learning disabilities. I have experience working with children who are ESL or ELL. I have worked with elementary, secondary and high school students.

I worked as a tutor all through college at Iowa State University. I tutored Math (up through Trig), general and organic chemistry, and statistics 101. These were the main classes I taught, but I also did Spanish 1, ecology, and food science/nutrition. I also tutored some high school students in all subjects but mostly math and science.
I love helping people. I believe that no one is stupid just some people are better in some areas than other people. I enjoy helping people learn because I love seeing the "light bulb click on above their head" when they finally grasp a concept. I try to simplify the subject (or put it in terms the student will grasp) so the student will understand it, thus my teaching method depends on how the student learns.

I am particularly adept at explaining mathematical concepts and techniques to students. I find a way to build on what the student already knows. I find a way to explain a technique based on what the student already knows how to do. If a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show the student how I solve the problem, explaining my thinking and results as I go along. Then, I give the student a blank sheet of paper and they have to do the problem all by themselves. I may also change the problem a little and have them do it again to practice the technique.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses specifically in test prep.
I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of th ... read more

As each student is unique, my teaching style is eclectic and tailored to the individual student as to how they best learn. Having a degree in Psychology gives me the unique opportunity to understand the individual, present them with techniques that promote better study habits, and increase their retention. I have dealt with situations of dyslexia, test anxiety, panic attacks, and challenging home/lifestyle situations, and have met with those challenges with success. As the result of three college degrees (BS, MBA, and EdD) plus 20 years as a college professor and researcher/analyst, I possess extentive experience teaching and using statistics, algebra, business math, research skills, report writing, and a variety of business disciplines. A 30 year passion for history has resulted in an encyclopedic knowledge of American and world history. Although I do not possess a credential in history, I have been told that what I know and the manner in which I present it makes it fascinating for the listener. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.
While earning my bachelor's degree, I worked in several tutoring programs assisting students with reading comprehension and writing composition sk ... read more

I focus on the individual first - her style of learning, what makes her mind tick, how she responds to different methods of teaching. I believe that people are treated fairly by being treated individually. I also believe that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to set an example of genuine care and concern for the learner.
During the last five years I have taught others how to use social media, viral marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing more effectively. I have been recognized by peers as a leader in the emerging space of social knowledge, which embraces a holistic approach to the social interactions an organization has internally and with customers and partners.
