Down to Earth tutor more worried about the academics than $

Tutored (recommended by school) fellow classmates elementary though college and various friends and family. Was the type of student that would teach myself and help others that were behind. A Little Bit About Me...

In 2001, I graduated from IUP with a degree in elementary education. I substitute taught around the South Hills of Pittsburgh for a year, then moved to Virginia, where I taught fifth grade for four years. The first three years were in a public school and the fourth in a private school. I taught all subject areas and skill level abilities.
I would describe my teaching style as hands on and according to multiple learning styles. I understand that students learn best when they have the option of working with material objects. I also realize that students all learn in different ways and therefore I try to teach to each student's learning style. If a student doesn't understand it one way, I try to teach it another way so that he/she can learn it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I had been a teacher for 12 years engaging in a multitude of learning styles and methodology. I spent 6 years serving as principal at all levels. I was Director of Education for two years and then served as Superintendent of Schools for two districts for a total of 15 years. During that time I never lost connection with teaching, mentoring students from all levels of education and continued to teach in the classroom at least once a week. I was an adjunct professor for two years at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania. I retired in 2009 to travel and photograph the country, while living in and RV. I miss teaching and have sought a position with your entity hoping to tutor while traveling America.

I enjoy teaching and working with all children. They are our future. Through my teaching career, I have seen that children learn in many different ways. Some children learn faster than others and there are some children who are visual learners and others who are audio learners. When I first meet children either in a classroom or by tutoring them, I like to give a quick assessment of their learning because that is how I derive my lessons. If a child or a group of children need visual props, I will create them or if a child would need to be challenged then I would extend my lessons and materials academically higher. The way that I teach is age-appropriate and I will never let a child fall behind- I will always let them achieve to their potential.

I enjoy teaching children at all levels. I find that children learn at different speeds and by different means. So, to be truly effective you have to present the information to the broadest base of students and hope you address all their needs. Having a great level of flexibility in your lesson plans is need to ensure that no one student falls behind.
Over the past year, I served as an Americorps volunteer in an inner city charter school with an emphasis on character education. I worked one on one with students helping them with math, reading, and science skills. I assisted in classroom teaching of mini lessons too. I also helped with their after-school program, I also created supplemental study guides and multimedia software to help students to improve their study skills. I returned to school in 2007 to pursue a career in education. In several corporate positions, I was responsible for training new employees in various store operations. I have volunteered as a teacher in my church and taught Sunday School at the middle school level. During my courses and student teaching, I utilized many hands-on and inquiry-based tools to help students learn new concepts. Because I am certified in Elementary Education, I have a solid background in many academic disciplines.
I believe in a constructivist approach to education. Stusents come with prior knowledge of topics. My goal is to get those students to connect prior knowledge with new information. I also believe that there are mltiple ways that students learn. They can have multiple intelligences in several areas, such as artistic, kinesthetic, or visual and spatial. I have a love of learning, and there is nothing better than teaching others to love it, too. I am very patient, organized, and considerate of your child's needs, learning pace, and abilities. I believe that anyone can do well if they have the proper guidance and help. I've been there, and I hope that my experience can help make a difference to your child's education.
In the past, I have tutored other students, usually my peers, off and on, and it never fails to provide satisfaction at helping others learn. As a 2009 graduate of Allegheny College, I earned a BS in Biology with a minor in French. I served as a "Peer Leader" for incoming freshman, where I acted in the capacity as a teaching assistant and made myself available to the students if they needed help writing papers, doing research, or with any other academic aspect not directly related to that class. A Little Bit About Me...

While studying at Bradley University, I worked with the CHOICES program tutoring local disadvantaged High School students in core curriculum: History, English, Math, Science, etc. As a French tutor, I volunteered to help my fellow classmates learn the French language. After obtaining my Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Spanish from Bradley University in May of 2006, I continued to provide educational instruction as an AmeriCorps KEYS volunteer. As a team of AmeriCorps members, we developed a grant-winning curriculum that benefited underprivileged youth, provided one-on-one instruction to struggling elementary students in Math and Reading, counseled at-risk youth, and taught lessons at a day camp for disadvantaged children. In addition to my service in AmeriCorps, my primary project as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine was to teach English at a secondary school 18 hours per wee ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a result of my post-high school studies in mathematics and business, I feel I'm suited to tutor people in those subjects. Statistics, quantitative methods, and analytical methods are my strongest subjects. Additionally, I have college graduate level skills in English/grammar, science, and social studies. Although theses were not part of my major, I do have above high school skills to share with those who need help in those subjects. Out of those three, my English skills are above average from writing many research papers on business subjects.
This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student.
