My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Algebra can be easy! There is no reason why students should have to struggle with it. I've seen many reasons why students haven't gotten an A in it, and that's usually because they just aren't focused or can't seem to get motivated. Another problem with Algebra has been making connections with real life. It's very hard for a lot of kids to "get into" something when they can't see the use of it. Those real-world connections really need to be made.

I've got around 8 years of college and university work under my belt, and I am getting ready to finish a BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I love teaching. I got the teaching bug while teaching English as a Foreign Language in China. I taught there for almost 9 years altogether, 1 year in Beijing, 7 years in Tianjin, and 1 year in Taiwan. I now work as a substitute teacher for Lewis County Schools and I also volunteer in the school library where I help struggling students with reading.
I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. I don't have a formal experience of teaching in a class, but i do have a lot of experience from teaching my fellow classmates and occasionally teaching in front of the whole class. Its actually easier for me to teach one on one since I think I can give the student all the personal attention they need and will be able to devote more time inorder to make them understand the subject and master it. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in Elementary Education with a Math concentration. I have taught 7th grade science for one year, 2 years 7th grade math, and a year of 9-10 grade Pre-Algebra, 11-12 Consumer Math, and an 8th grade math class. I would stay after school and tutor students that were having problems in my class.
I have worked with children the majority of my teen and adult life. I was a camp counselor where I was around them for a week and that's where my love for wanting to teach began. I have completed training over engaging difficult students and I have also learned more innovative techniques in which to use when engaging students who are trying to achieve more challenging skills. I designed a program called Math Mates, which was an after school intervention program for students who needed more hands on time for learning, I opened the program up for all students but set aside certain days when specific students were invited so we could use more hands on manipulative and we worked on the different content standards.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is very patient, kind, and laid back. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn and finish the work they are given, so I very rarely tell someone how to finish a problem or correct a sentence. Instead, I give suggestions of things to think about and ask a lot of questions so that the student can get to the answer themselves. I will gladly point them in the right direction but hesitate to ever point to the answer as I feel the lesson is very easily lost. I see a power in one-on-one teaching/learning and therefore have a great appreciation for tutoring.

I try a variety of approaches to see what works with each student. If you have 25 students in a class, you can have 25 different learning styles. I believe a lot in hands-on and learning from others. Questions are always welcome. I continually do course work to keep up on new approaches. Being teachable is key. I have seen students I work with have success.
