Hidden Talents Tutoring

My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. Learning can be hard work at times, but it should be satisfying.

A Little Bit About Me...

I'm in my senior year of High School, I have worked with my siblings on their school all of my life. I've helped my little brother who has ADHD with his homework, I've worked with him through book projects, spelling tests, history homework, pretty much anything and everything. I'm also very talented in the English area, writing and grammar specifically. Can write with both my right and my left hands, I work well with children no matter the age.

During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.
I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. I enjoy not only helping them learn, but also their backstory and considering how it affects their learning style. I also have an innate love of learning, and feel that it's a great gift to help someone realize their own potential.

From 1980-1989 I worked as a Program Coordinator for a Developmental Achievement Center for mentally handicapped adults. My responsibilities included teaching, preparing learning materials for basic reading, personal finance, and vocational skills, implementing behavior programs, supervising 7 staff members, and writing quarterly lesson plans and progress reports. I also spent a couple of hours per week for 2 years, tutoring my blind supervisor on the use of computers. My teaching experience began during high school when I would help out at my church's Sunday School providing remedial services like handing out papers. Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored beginning accounting students for a couple hours a week aside from the usual work of helping classmates.
