More About This Tutor...

I believe that I am a very patient person, as well as someone who is easy to get along with. I would describe my teaching style as calm and focused on fundamentals. For example, when teaching math, I focus on building conceptual understanding rather than on plugging numbers into a formula. I am a firm believer that if the student truly has a deep understanding of the concepts, he or she will be able to approach and solve a wide range of problems, even ones that haven't been encountered before.
During my undergraduate studies, I was involved in various tutoring/mentoring organizations on campus. I served as a mentor for local area children ages 8-14 as part of an after-school "big buddy" program. During my junior and senior years, I tutored newer students in math, science, and engineering courses. Additionally, I served as a teaching assistant for an upper-level engineering course w ... read more

It is difficult to describe my teaching style because I try to adapt to the student. Students learn differently and therefore it is my belief that you must observe first and then you have to adapt to the student, especially in a one on one situation. Some students may learn better if you play a game with them, others if you read them a passage. I try to learn as much as I can about the student and adapt to their individual needs, especially for those with learning disabilities and special needs.
I have had a deep interest in helping people since I was a young child. Seeing someone succeed because of my help is one of the greatest motivators for me, especially when it's "against the odds". As a college student I tutored the students who really wanted to learn but couldn't through no fault of their own--those with learning disabilities and non-native English speakers. I have tutored ... read more

My teaching approach is to be direct and explicit, as well as facilitative. When working with students, my goal is that they internalize concepts and strategies that will ultimately enable them to perform independently. Then, when teaching reading and writing, I emphasize underlying structures and organization of text and the steps in the writing process. Breaking down barriers by pulling out language and ideas opens the door to rapport and understanding a student’s strengths and weaknesses.
As an experienced Remedial Language Specialist, I have been responsible for designing and implementing individualized programs for students with a wide range of learning styles. In addition to fostering reading proficiency, vocabulary acquisition and strategies for passage comprehension, I am also an expert at teaching the writing process from brainstorming to outlining to final revision. I am ... read more

While I strive to convey my own enthusiasm for learning, my first priority is to be adaptable to different learning styles. I appreciate the concept of tutoring for the one-on-one scenario it offers because I know that many students struggle to have their needs met in a classroom setting. As a tutor, I aim to understand the individual needs of each student in order to effectively help them learn and help them enjoy learning.
I enjoy learning and think of my education as a continual process. In my experiences, I have gained a wide range of skills encompassing leadership, peer training, and interpersonal communication. I have earned a BA in Communication, completed a graduate level Leadership program, studied in Spain and most recently, I traveled extensively in Peru. In my previous career as a sales representative in Telecommunications, I was quickly promoted to a leadership/project ... read more

I think Math is the most beautiful subject and the highest form of human expression. A lot of times people are turned away from it due to a high school math experience that they perceive as dry and boring. When I tell people I love math, I too often hear "well, better you than me!" I think part of the high school math experience should include turning students on to mathematical discovery. Confronting confusion and working through to develop an understanding that feels personal and thorough. I believe that everyone must learn in an individual way at their own pace and I am prepared to put in the necessary effort to give my students that opportunity. Sure, there is certain material that just needs to be learned, but even what seems dry can be presented in such a way as to generate enthusiasm and interest in the subject. I think inspiration and excitement about mathematics is the mo ... read more
