ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

I am a behavioral specialist with 12 years of experience working with individuals between the ages of 2 and 19 who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, Traumatic Brain Injury, emotional disturbance, Autism, Downs Syndrome, and other developmental disorders. This is what I love doing, and I have the patience to reteach in multiple ways over multiple days. Over the past 5 years I have taught English Language Arts to sixth graders, and tutored in all 6th grade subject areas while using positive reinforcement to enhance productivity. In September, I will be sitting for the certification exam to become a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). I believe that everyone can learn and everyone has their strengths. We just have to figure out how to let their inner scholar come out to play.

More About This Tutor...

During my college experience it became apparent to me that I loved how the brain worked, which led to my love for teaching, especially the at-risk population. I began working with the autistic population at a private clinic in November of 2004 while going to school full time at the University of Houston. I then decided to become a teacher, where I went to ACT Houston, to obtain my alternative certification to become a special education teacher. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is differentiated teaching, as this combines many different learning styles and is able to reach most, if not all studens. I teach using many different hands-on activities, as I believe that it teaches real-world applications. I believe in texts/paper assignements but always try to back up the assignment with some type of real-world experience/scenario,; whether it be having the student give a speech, act out a script or physically demonstrate a concept or a combination of all of the above.
I have obtained my Bachelors in human Services and completed the teaching certification program at Lonestar College. I have passed my content exams in special education ec-12 and the generalist 4-8. I will take my social studies 4-8 content next month. I have taught adults with special needs for two years. I am substituting in intermediate and middle school grades while seeking ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Creative, innovative, and interesting lessons are my forte. I am experienced in providing a constructivist-based approach to knowledge acquisition. Hands-on lesson promote student involvement and increase the development of student responsibility towards their education. I have found that a cross-curriculum approach to the material being presented fosters true understanding and relevance.
I am a student of history and believe that knowledge acquisition comes from interest and enthusiasm on the part of the learner. This interest comes from having an instructor who them selves is a learner. A partnership in the tasks being presented usually results in the student wanting to understand the information and making connections. To promote critical thinking I present the material in a global manner, allowing the learner to relate the information/skill to the real-world.
