Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive verbal and behavioral reinforcement to the student, including reports to parents about same, all these are things that come to mind.
