I enjoy teaching and assisting students to obtain a goal. I enjoy the change in attitude and increase in self confidence when "it finally clicks" and students realize they understand the subject matter at hand and CAN do it. I think everyone is capable of learning anything, the key is to figure out what style works for them. I believe, by currently being a student myself, I have a better understanding of the stresses and constraints on students. I grew up with both partents in the public education system, I was a student-teacher in H.S. and I earned a bachelor degree in Parks, Recreation, Natural Resource Management with a minor in Art Education. After graduation I taught Art and pre-school classes for the Springfield, MO Parks Dept. I was a librarian at the Springfield Art Museum. I worked for the Dept. of Social Services, Div. of Youth Services for 14 years and assisted the teachers with the education ciriculum. 1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. Never force them. There isn't one correct way. Make a suggestion on how to improve and explain why you are making the suggestion. 4) Do multiple versions of a similar problem. The first time I will complete the problem, explaining each step. The next time the person I am tutoring will guide me through the problem, telling me what to do next. Then the person being tutored will do the problem while I observe. 5)Let them make mistakes. Explain why it is a mistake and show them how to detect it in the future.

I teach through discovery (trial/error), tactile (hands-on), play, & also providing a positive approach/praise to learning. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings & learning experiences.
