Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy. Playing simple math games or reading games is a easy way to teach a child, without them realizing they are learning.

Learning can be fun and exciting; it's all in our attitude!

I have been in education for 18 years. I started in special education and general education. I taught math, English, reading, science, and history. I also taught the GED and the state test (CA). I tutored all subjects to homebound students. I facilitated reading programs and held workshops for teachers that taught special needs students. I was also a high school counselor for 5 years and have my credential in school psychology
I love working with students and my style is direct teaching; I feel that a student needs to master the concept being taught before moving on to the next level.

A Little Bit About Me...

Brain-based, student-centered
I'm Ebony! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's in Cognitive Studies and Education, and earned a Master's degree with distinction in Curriculum and Instruction. I am a Cognitive Specialist/neuroeducator whose sole objective is bridging the divide between the student and the content, using methods based on the individual's learning style. As I think back to when I have achieved most success as a student, it was always because of a phenomenal educator who taught the content in ways that appealed to my learning style. I was immersed in the content, and I thrived because of it. I provide the same instructional strategies and experiences for my students, who vary from children with neurological differences such as Autism, Dyslexia, and other learning differences, to gifted students, to adults who never learned how to read or perform mathematics.
