Working with students in math, I like to ask what the student enjoys doing while not in school. I like to relate this to the math to make it more interesting as well as making it fun. This will also make the student more comfortable and lowers the stress level. In lower level courses in basic math up to middle level courses such as algebra, the methods used are integrating the content into the unsolved variables and/or word problems. In higher level courses such as differential calculus, I like to give a specific scenario where the content would relate to what they would do in the activity or hobby outside of school.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a strong background in mathematics because I have earned a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics. I have always been extremely dedicated to my education; I have won numerous awards for academic excellence. During my time as an undergrad, I wrote many mathematical proofs and submitted them to college mathematics journals. I also have experience doing research in robotics. For the previous two years, I have tutored students in calculus, linear algebra, and algorithms. I was also a lab assistant who helped students with Java programming assignments.
My approach to teaching students mathematics is to first ensure they understand the basics. I was let go from a local company earlier this year. I have decided to make a career change and my goal is to teach math at the high school level. I have a year of college to be certified. I'm a full student at CCC, and will take the Pedagogy requirements at Elmira College. I intend to tutor and substitute teach this winter and spring during college. In industry, I was a Mechanical Engineer and spent time in management. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a MBA. I spent ten years in the Army and National Guard.
