A Little Bit About Me...

I served as a tutor, primarily for English, History, and writing, for three years while attending Southern Vermont College. Following graduation, I worked for three years as a paraprofessional for Leland & Gray Union High School. While working in this capacity there were several one on one situations similar to the relationship that exists between tutors and their students. In addition to the aforementioned subjects I tutored while in college, I also assisted students in other areas such as basic math and general science.
I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. Because I have had to meet the needs of so many different students in so many different environments, I am flexible with teaching methods. A lack of resources overseas drove me to be creative and exercise methods of experiential learning: hands-on and engaged learning. I believe in creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, with some room for fun. I acknowledge that every student possesses a different learning style and I strive to compliment that, especially while tutoring. I maintain high expectations and expect considerable progress. I have taught for over 25 years in settings as varied as inner city schools in NYC to a small public school in Arlington Vermont, and an elite private school at Stratton Vermont. I have taught remedial, basic, bilingual and honors level classes in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science in class room settings. I have tutored various sciences and math, including Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 on basic and honors levels. I have also tutored students for SAT prep in English and Chemistry. My undergraduate degree as an English major has enabled me to excell at writing research papers during my medical science career, as well as help my students with research projects and papers.
