I Help Students Tackle Math With Confidence!

I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!
I bring both personality and creativity to math sessions, and I am concerned with the intellectual and emotional well-being of all tutees/students. I currently have a long list of clients that I serve through one-on-one, in-home tutoring--and have both a high success rate and client loyalty with them.

Share your knowledge to someone else.

Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I will implement practices and materials I think will fit the student's profile. I feel a teacher wears many hats and you must be prepared to wear a different one any day.

GED is one of my top subjects!

I teach to the individual as well as to the group. In the classroom, I use the chalk/marker board, text and handout materials, and computers if available. Outside the classroom (libraries or other public meeting place, I bring my own instructional materials.
I am a college graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science emphasis on Mathematics. I have been an educator most of my career. I began as a Substitute Teacher from Kindergarten to high school Physical Education you name it I taught it - this was not what I wanted to do at the time, but as I reminiscence now it was a pleasurable experience. Then I had the opportunity to teach computer basics to adults as well as K-12 children - now I felt like I was getting somewhere (I'm working in my field!). Then I found my teaching passion - teaching the GED course Oh Yeah! It was heart warming to see adults return to school take c ... read more

My comments on tutoring GED : Passed virtual testing.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

I have tutored in a community college for the last year. I also tutor Chinese students in math and biology; I speak Chinese and understand the language barriers that face non-speaking English students. I got my B.S years ago .I went back to school in my forties .I also tutor Psychology and Sociology I have several papers in review on Psychology related issues. I am President of our schools research group.
I love teaching. I feel children learn differently .Some children are visual while other children are lecture oriented. I have many ways of teaching, but I feel actual interaction works the best. I also feel that an approach to the big picture of how the material fits into the everyday life situations helps. I like to feel if you take the anxiety out of the material students learn with an open mind. Learning should be fun and rewarding.

More About This Tutor...

I earned a BA in math and chemistry secondary education from Olivet College, a liberal arts college in Olivet, MI. There I earned enough credits to fill the requirements for a math major and four minors including organic, physical, and analytical chemistry and communications. While a student, I worked as a tutor for the athletic department helping athletes with math and sciences. After graduating I was a substitute teacher working for five weeks long term in a math class before finding my first teaching position in Detroit. The school was an adult education school that teaches life skills run by a company called Detroit Association of Black Organizations. They hired me to also teach their summer GED program where I taught testing skills, life skills, math and English. I now teach algebra I, algebra II, geometry, pre-calculus, and academic studies at Riverside Academy West (located ... read more

My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I worked for 10 years in the field which included design of subdivisions, site condominiums, and other developments. Correspondence between review engineers on projects required proper writing and grammatical skills. Since October of 2009,I have worked part-time for a Metro Detroit tutoring agency. Subjects include Math, Science, English, and ACT test preparation.
Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
