In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. In time, it is my goal that your student will be able to study on his/her own, without my help, and be able to fully comprehend and use the data. I have a background in study skills and educating others, as well as excellent communication skills and a lot of patience. I have done four years of math and chemistry (respectively) during high school, including elementary calculus and quantum mechanics. I have also done three years of Spanish with and without "Rosetta Stone" (total of one year with "Rosetta Stone"). I have also done ... read more

I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter. As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.

Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make it clear what I expect and what direction we want to go. I emphasize that as long as they give it a 100% effort, they will do well. I use as many teaching tools as possible. I make the concepts as clear as possible, and I check for understanding before we move on. I make classes interesting by connecting the material to things they like. I also like to incorporate games. Finally, I like to maintain a sense of humor. This not only allows class to be enjoyable, but the students do better when they are relaxed. The combination of organization, making the material clear, using various methods, and making the classes fun is how I make teaching successful and enjoyable. I have been teaching children of all ages in many settings for the past 6 years. I have worked with students of all levels and helped them be successful. In college I tutored elementary through college students including English Language Learners, in various subjects. I have also helped and taught in the classroom, mostly in small groups or one-on-one. Through my work as an aide at an elementary school I have learned the standards for each grade and am familiar with the curriculum and methods used, especially for the lower students who I work with. I believe that learning should be fun and effective. It is important to me that students enjoy the discovery and challenge of learning but that they also learn the discipline and perseverance that will help them continue to grow. I enjoy using many styles of learning and kid-friendly activities to help students understand and master mate

I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. I like to have several tricks in my bag so that if one approach does not work I will have other methods to try to allow others to grasp the same material in a different way that makes sense to them. I am particularly sensitive to students who feel defeated in mathematics education and reap great rewards when I see that they are beginning to understand and believe in themselves. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed a tea

I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Sometimes a positive and fun mentor is a great way to learn a difficult subject. As an undergraduate at CSU, Sacramento I volunteered my time to tutor a student from the time she was in 6th grade through 8th grade. Tutoring was done mostly in math. I have a BA in Environmental Studies with

I have a passion for higher education and helping young men and women reach their academic goals. I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. My teaching style is focused on the individual student. I realize that not all students are receptive to the same teaching style, as a result I am a flexible teacher who is willing to change my approach if the student is not responding positively to my initial teaching techniques. I have recently completed my Masters degree in Public Policy from Oregon State University where I worked as a social science researcher with the department of sociology. I utilized several methods in my research, including both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I have extensive experience with SPSS and other statistical software in
