A Little Bit About Me...

I had the opportunity to begin my teaching career in Miami, Florida. I taught 4th & 5th graders at a private academy. I was able to learn much from my students who represented more than 15 different countries. My semester immersion experience in Costa Rica helped me to understand my students and their families better. While in Miami I tutored 5 different aged children, in various home and school settings. To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association. My teaching style is very simple and I believe it is effective. I have found that going through problems does not always help kids learn. I always try to tutor the basics and establish a plan for problem solving. The children need to know how to attach a problem not how to plug numbers into equations.
While attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell I work to help other students that were having difficulty understanding the material presented. I obtained a bachelor of science in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Analysis. The course work gave me a very strong understanding of Mathematics, and Physics.
