Since earning my degree in Math in 1984, I have worked in the Software development field. The last 15 years I have been an independent consultant. I have 2 college age children and 2 elementary age twins. My college age children have both taken math through calculus so I have had many opportunities to tutor them over the years in advanced math. I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it.
