A Little Bit About Me...

I taught Middle School band for 30 years in the public schools, followed by 9 years part-time at the respected Old Trail School in Bath, OH. My bands at Bolich Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, OH received many "Outstanding" ratings at O.M.E.A. contests. I have also substituted in several local school districts for a wide variety of subjects, including Spanish and French. I have also tutored Spanish privately, and given private lessons on piano and flute.
I always try to start from "where the student is" and build on from starting point. I believe in positive reinforcement and that anything worth having in life requires consistent effort. I frequently am told after a day of subbing, "Mr. Burns, you are the greatest sub ever!" My wife and I also still perform as musicians in local restaurants, including several Mexican restaurants where we perform many songs in Spanish.

Tutoring students is a big part of teaching. I have always tutored students in my classes and anyone who has asked for my help. I have tutored students on their writing, reading and basic math skills. Being a Special Education teacher has afforded me many opportunities to tutor. During school time and after school. Being from the area and having worked in education my entire career, I have a good understanding of the needs of today's student. I currently work at a local University where I see firsthand the struggle underprepared students face. I am an experienced educator having taught every grade level from preK through college.
My style of teaching is adaptive for each individual student when possible. Each student has their own way of learning and it is my job to adjust to that. I try to meet the student where they are right now and devise a plan to fit what they want to do and accomplish the goals that they set. I treat each student with respect and expect the same in return. I am flexible and understanding, but I will push the student to achieve their potential.
