In my classroom one might observe the same material presented in various ways by means of lectures, DVD documentaries, readings, discussions, and Power Point presentations in order to accommodate the students’ different methods of knowledge acquisition.
For the last four years I have been at Cardigan Mountain School, where I taught English, Latin, Homeric Greek, ESL, and Ancient History. I collaborated with the English Dept., providing, via Power Point Lecture Presentations, the historical background to Tennyson’s epic account of the Light Brigade at Balaklava and Shakespeare’s Henry V, and, as part of the eight grade history seminar, I delivered a forty-minute lecture on Hitler and the Holocaust. One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline. The process leads the student to the discovery of concepts based on practical demonstrations by the educator with as much repetition as necessary for the student to achieve comfortable mastery.

I am particularly enthusiastic about teaching mathematics to all students, and my record documents this fact. As an undergraduate I studied education, and acquired a secondary education license while pursuing a rigorous mathematics curriculum. At Dartmouth I have devoted myself to helping my students learn the power and utility of mathematics.
