Microsoft Excel is one of my top subjects! I have been training students in the Microsoft Office applications since they were released almost thirty years ago. I've developed and marketed training materials nationwide, and am the author of Excel Basic Training, Excel VBA Basic Training, and Word Basic Training.

From 1990 to 2000, I was an international Excel, Word, and Access trainer and lecturer for Dunn & Bradstreet Business Education Services. During this period, I trained over 25,000 people in 48 states. My company was allied with WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA as the World Book Education Technology Training Group, a program that trained educators nationwide. Between 2009 and 2012, I worked for a Microsoft Partner (Mosaic Corporation) as Certified Microsoft Trainer, where I trained Geek Squad and Tech Center personnel in Microsoft Office and Windows 7.

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it!
