My teaching style is as varied as the students I have taught. I feel it is important to relate to the student in order to help them learn best. When there are different learning styles, I do my best to use a variety of teaching techniques in order to cater to the need of the student. I feel that follow up is important, as well as repetition and hands-on practice. I am not a lecturer. I find my best students learn one on one or in a small group where they can be comfortable and ask questions. Currently I am using books on music and musicians as part of my lesson plans. I believe literature is extremely important in teaching children. I am direct with children in my classroom. I give them expectations, I set goals, and I follow through. It is important for an instructor to state exactly what is expected of the student in order to help them achieve their goals. My style is nurturing and thorough, patiently reviewing concepts before continuing on. I use the popular, modern Alfred Method...these books have colorful,delightful illustrations. This includes "Music for Little Mozarts." The upper levels offer lesson, recital, technique, theory and composition books as well as specialty titles (Christmas, etc). I specialize in homeschoolers. To make sure they don't miss the experience of a school program, our recitals may offer singing, dance, costume/drama, recitation, student compositions, etc. in addtion to piano pieces. I have orchestrated countywide interdenominational events so I enjoy doing this on a smaller scale with children. And they love it as do their parents. As a composer and performer, with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Theory and Composition, I have always sought to teach music from the bottom up. As a master teacher, with a Master of Science Degree in Music Education, I have worked to develop my own programs and courses of study that teach to any curriculum.
