My comments on tutoring Life Science : Taught this to my children

I have been home schooling my two children for 13 years. My oldest is graduating this year and attending the college of her choice. My youngest is in 9th grade. Through these years of experience, I have discovered the best ways to motivate, to understand a student and to help a student understand themselves and the way they best learn. I have a broad understanding of many subjects as a result of teaching them myself for the past several years.
I follow a Socratic method of teaching. Leading the student into discovery by asking them questions, understanding what the student knows/understands and building on that. I am low key, but demand a good grasp on the subject before moving forward with new information.

As a person who works with various groups of people, I continuously find helping others reach their full potential exciting and rewarding. My highest degree is a Ph.D. in Educational Administration with a specialization in Pre-K through 12th grade; however, I have provided adult instruction at the college level and through workshops for over 8 years as well. If you need to get started right away and want results, then I am the right person.
I use effective practices, strategies, and resources to inspire and enrich each student's learning. Direct instruction, workbooks, visual aids, computers, math manipulative, hands-on activities, mini-labs, student-centered discussions, one-on-one tutoring and small-group instruction are used to honor various learning styles, students' needs and goals, as well as to ensure they are active learners. Students participate in small-group inst ... read more

Let's get back down to the basics (Latin, History, Science)

I like to boil things down to the basics. With Latin and Science that means learning as much as one can about the basic elements and then building one step at a time on those basics. In history, it means learning the story, and telling the story.
I recieved a BA degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I majored in Classical Civilization (with a Latin Concentration) and History. I have 12 years of experience teaching Latin. The courses I have taught include introductory courses, Latin I, Latin II, and Latin III. 3 years of Life Science teaching experience. 4 years of History teaching experience (as a tour guide and history interpreter) 12 years of experience teaching writing as well.

Life Science is one of my top subjects!

I am an evolutionary biologist and paleontologist who has been active in the field for over a decade. I have been a professor of college-level biology, paleontology, and anatomy for 8 years on top of 5 years assistant teaching geology courses during my graduate education. I have a broad, interdisciplinary background, which is a result of my broad curiosity about the scientific exploration of all aspects of the natural world. I have experience teaching classes as large as 400 students and as small as 4, though most of my experience has been in the 12-24 student range. I have had the opportunity to teach at several different types of schools, including Ivy League and small liberal arts colleges, where I have had a lot of exposure to pedagogical methods that encourage permanent understanding and maintain interest. I have taken the opportunity to participate in several teaching workshop ... read more

Proficient and patient tutor: science, statistics, and math

I like to give a diagnostic test at the first meeting to assess the client's familiarity with the topic, then, customize lessons to fit her or his needs. I aim to build a strong foundation, then, increase difficulty of concepts as client's comfort level with the topic increases. I use materials that are challenging, but not intimidating. I am an instructor, who coaches along the way, rather than doing the client's work for them, to justify the fee. I have learned that the client benefits when he or she is forced to think through a problem and come up with a solution, that he or she can justify and explain. I vary the lessons and materials to decrease client boredom. I assess the client's progress at specific stages to determine proficiency with fundamental and other essential concepts, prior to introducing advancd subject matter. If the client moves to quickly or has weak fundamentals, f ... read more

I graduated from Vanderbilt University in May 2010, and I am currently applying to medical school. In high school and college, I tutored in math, science, English, and test prep. Math and Science are my favorite subjects, but I also have much experience with tutoring English and grammar. I have also tutored people preparing for tests such as the ACT, SAT, and Gateway.
I always look forward to tutoring new people becuase I not only get to make a difference in their life by helping them master what they're struggling with, but I also get to learn about people and different learning styles. I view tutoring as a way to help others while improving my interpersonal skills. I value all the skills I gain from tutoring because they will be assets when I become a physician. Guided by experiences in my life and lessons I’ve learned through teaching, I’ve come to understand that all children learn differently. My goal is to first determine where the students need help, based on their learning style, and then focus my knowledge and experience to help them using proven teaching techniques and my own teaching methods. My philosophy of education is that I believe that teachers should provide an opportunity to facilitate the academic, social, and individual growth of students. We should incorporate cooperative learning, which includes literacy, math and science manipulatives and writing to help children to work cooperatively and explore their various talents.
Teaching is my passion and I believe that by teaching I can instill firm educational values in children and help develop within them a desire to learn and grow, which will lead to academic pride and s ... read more

I have a wide variety of experience in mentoring and teaching. As a graduate with a degree in journalism, I have excellent oral and written communication skills including spelling, grammar, and analytical writing. As a science teacher to a group of English language learners, I mastered the art of differential teaching to reach several different levels of learners. I've taught students performing several grade levels below where they should be, as well as students that were exceptionally gifted. I've taught: reading strategies, literacy development, middle-school science, writing, character building, leadership principals, organization/planning skills, and journalism.
My specialty is developing creative strategies to get students to develop a desire to learn. In my experience, I've found that tapping into students interests and finding a way to tie that into the lesson not only g ... read more
