A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. Repetition is very helpful and note cards are good for memorization. Taking notes is a good way for the student to stay focused. A little comedy helps too to help students to remember. I enjoy helping students, adult or younger, feel the success of learning. Sometimes it is a struggle, but it is always fulfilling to see the relief and happiness they feel when they do succeed.
My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. I have found through my most recent teaching and tutoring opportunities that all children have the capability to learn. Some just need that one-on-one assistance in order to succeed. I believe in hands-on learning that provides students of all learning styles with the opportunity to excel. I also believe in discussion as another means of learning through the method of Socratic questioning for all levels of English learning. I am eager to provide the means for each of my students to be able to not only learn to read and write effectively, but to also be able to use critical thinking in all subjects and levels of learning.
