A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BS in business administration with a major in marketing and minor in English. I have been substitute teaching at various times in public schools since 1995. I have taught beginning computer classes to adults and have taught third through fifth grade boys at church. I hold a current substitute teachers license from the state of Alabama. My strongest subjects are history, grammar, reading, literature, drama, and social studies.
I try to put myself in the student's shoes and find which method of teaching can reach the student best. I try to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses and work out a program to help him or her achieve his or her goals. Many children struggle with classroom learning because they require a different learning method than the one being offered or more direct attention than a teacher of 20+ students can offer. As a dyslexia therapist I was instructed in a number of different approaches to teaching and how to match each one to an individual student's needs. I use age appropriate workbooks to help children to practice English. I read enjoyable books to children and have them read back to me while questioning them on the logic and content of the books. I have computer software learning equipment, learning games, learning blocks, flash cards, etc. that helps children to develop a love for reading/English. I am good at evaluating a child and determining which grade level he/she is at and trying to advance them to their current grade level.
