A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout high school and college, I have tutored peers and younger students in both math and physics several times, occasionally for pay. Last year I was a course assistant for a college freshman-year math course in theoretical math at Harvard University. I am enrolling in a PhD program in pure math at the University of Texas, Austin, where I will have a 16-hour-per week teaching load including three sections of undergraduate calculus. When I was a course assistant, my section scored higher on the quizzes and exams than the other sections. It is difficult to describe my teaching style because I try to adapt to the student. Students learn differently and therefore it is my belief that you must observe first and then you have to adapt to the student, especially in a one on one situation. Some students may learn better if you play a game with them, others if you read them a passage. I try to learn as much as I can about the student and adapt to their individual needs, especially for those with learning disabilities and special needs.

I ask questions, I make math fun!! I draw pictures. The assinments are OUR assignments the students are not alone. Math was hard for me too I GET why they are stuck!!
I work with students of various backgrounds, aging from pre teen to retirement age, many with learning disabilities, many who are also ahead of their peers. I have a resource room and lesson plans for each group of students seperated by subject. I help them with Math, time management and note taking. Every one can learn. Sometimes an individual learns in their own unique style and finding that style is the key to teaching them. The best way to teach someone is to guide them when they come to a road block, rather than to give them the answer. The amount of pride and prestige that comes from having figured out a problem on their own is the most important thing.

I have eight years experience teaching Math at Lyndon State College in Vermont and at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. I was also a writing tutor at The Writing Center at Lyndon State. In addition, I tutored students there in English,Math,and Economics for a program called Project Excel. I also attended tutor training sessions as part of that job. Additionally, I tutored college students privately while earning my degree at The University of Rhode Island.
