Throughout my successful career as a teacher and school counselor, I've instructed every level from kindergarten to college level. Likewise I've had the privilege of working with various cultures, ages and achievement levels. Due to my certification and years of experience I've taught every subject area in grades K-8, worked with high school students in language arts and sciences, assisted with study skills and test preparation and taught reading to adults as well as other college level classes. I have a reading endorsement and a counseling psychology certification so I am versed in Special Education issue also. My satisfaction comes when my students understand a concept, gain confidence as a learner and a person and reaches their full potential. For the last two years I have been involved in tutoring and I find it even more exciting and satisfying.

I have taught and tutored at all levels ranging from Elementary through College in both "Mainstream" and "Special Education" environments. In addition, I have a great deal of experience teaching and tutoring ESL and Law Students at the college and post-graduate levels. In conjunction with the instructional piece, I have designed, authored and implemented curricula in all of the above areas.
I am extremely individualized in my approach; by creating a Plan for each student based on a careful and non-threatening assessment of his/her needs, strengths and challenges. I feel very strongly about authentic and credible teacher reinforcement for every increment of effort and progress made toward each objective and goal within each respective student's Plan. Preparing Today for a Successful Tomorrow

I love teaching and working with children. I tutor full time. Teaching is my passion. I can set your child on the road to success. My students see entire grade level jumps in just a few hours of tutoring. I believe all children can reach their potential if they are given the appropriate tools and learning experiences. I use manipulatives and games to help make learning fun and to reinforce concepts. I offer a relaxed and gentle approach to learning that takes the child at his own pace and gives him every chance to succeed. I tutor students in Writing through the college level. I had my first story published in a children's magazine at the age of 10 years. I still publish articles today and I'm now working on a nonfiction book that I hope to get published soon. I take students through the five stages of writing a paper. I teach them how to write good topic sentences and how to support ... read more

Blueberry House; Preparing Today for a Successful Tomorrow

I have taught for 30 years. Five years ago I began tutoring when my daughter was diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder. I feel like I can do more as a tutor than a classroom teacher. My heart lies with these kids and I want to do everything I can to help make them a success. I create an individual course of study for each child based on their learning style. I help kids understand their homework and teach them how to study so they get more out of the time they are spending in their school work. I teach reading comprehension and fluency. My students typically see a two to three year jump in grade level after just a few hours of tutoring. I tutor children with ADD, dyslexia, sensory disorders, dysgrahia, autism, aspergers, and other learning disabilities. If you want only the best than call Blueberry House. Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.
I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the ... read more

As an English major I have always enjoyed and excelled in the field. I was top of my class in high school. I also aided in the kindergarten class. I changed my major in college because I knew English was my calling. I have a Bachelor's degree from Warner Pacific. I enjoyed my classes and did extremely well. I aided at Clackamas High for a while, where I enjoyed the one on one with the students. In my current job I have trained and taught many associates. I am a perfectionist who pays great attention to detail. I love to read, write and create. I have always wanted to work as a tutor.
I love teaching and working with children. I love English. I love seeing the expression in the eye of a student who finally understands the concepts. I know what it is like to struggle and get frustrated. In Jr high I was tutored in English and math. Once I understood the concepts there was no stopping ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have worked with children in multiple environments for over seven years. In my interactions with each child, I have customized the way I communicate and work with them to best suit their individual learning styles and needs. I love working with all children and believe that they are all capable and intelligent. I also believe that children retain more if they feel confident in their surroundings, if they are actually enjoying themselves, and if they are encouraged by a positive person. My goal when working with children is to provide these assets to learning so they will feel good about themselves and assist them in excelling in their goals and education. Through a prior job at a school for children with Learning Disabilities, I saw first hand how essential it is for a child to be in a positive learning environment and to receive tools that help them "learn how to learn". I have been very passionate about teaching struggling students, particularly in the area of reading. From 2000-2004, I taught struggling 8th grade readers and could see the impact that being behind in literacy skills has on students. Although I had already returned once to PSU in order to add my special education endorsement to my teaching license, I decided to return again to PSU and complete the Graduate Reading Program. I have also worked as a Title 1 Reading Specialist at the elementary level as well as a supplemental services provider within the public school setting through No Child Left Behind. Throughout the last 10 years, I have tutored students at both the middle and elementary school level in writing, spelling, reading and math. I am very driven to help struggling students be successful in school, as I had a child who struggled and I believe if given the adequate amount o ... read more

My teaching style is active and enthusiastic. I show students clues and shortcuts in all sorts of subjects so that learning can be fun and even easy. I am tolerant and patient, while at the same time I request diligence and assiduousness. I revel in the success of my students, thanks to their efforts and hard work. I love to see students finally understand something they find challenging.
My love of reading and writing has led me to excel in 2 languages. An English major at Carleton College, I mastered the art of putting thoughts on paper to persuade, compare, or explicate; as well as how to read for meaning. Later at the Sorbonne in Paris, I transferred these talents to French. I have since taught and tutored reading, writing, and speaking in both languages in the U.S. and abroad.

My teaching philosophy is first to have the knowledge for the subjects. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Certainly some refreshing maybe necessary, but most of the time the youth is behind so the teaching would focus on helping them reach their potential and moving forward.
During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science. I worked with the teachers to determine when assignments were due and worked on planning with the students to plan out how and when to work on projects to complete them on time. Also, from 2000 to 2007 I was a youth advocate which involved teaching career readiness classes, tutor ... read more
