A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently an undergraduate student studying communications. I have held four collegiate journalism internships, two of which were federal internships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In the past year, I served as assistant managing editor of my collegiate newspaper, The Oracle; served as assistant editor of the collegiate yearbook, The Eagle; and I served as a teaching assistant for the freshman introduction to journalism course at TN Tech University. This semester, I will serve as managing editor for both The Oracle and The Eagle, and I will continue to aid in teaching UNIV 1020. I will graduate with a B.S. in Communications December 19, 2009.

My teaching style is very relaxed, though I also encourage students to stay focused and on-task. I believe in creating a positive atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions. When I teach or tutor in writing, I make it my goal to give students a solid structure for composing assignments that they can use to write any paper. When I teach reading, I make it my goal to find something in the text to engage the students, since if they are not interested, they will not read or comprehend. I also was employed by the University to grade papers and offer assistance to underclassmen in the Chemical Engineering department. I have always loved children. Children are precious and all have very unique learning techniques. When I was a senior at Maryville High School, I taught Spanish to first graders. My partner and I were in charge of making lesson plans and fulfilling these plans for each class. I really enjoyed seeing the children get excited about learning.
I enjoy seeing children learn new things. I know that every child learns differently. It is important to get to know the children that you are teaching and figure out what teaching technique fits there needs. I feel like I do an excellent job of portraying what I am trying to teach.
