Spanish is one of my top subjects! Years within the country; years of study.

I believe that for languages, immersion is the best, if most impractical, way of teaching. Therefore, it is my goal to speak as much in the target language as possible in order to increase exposure to the language. I also believe that repetition is key, but through interactive games and everyday tasks, the rote memorization disappears within the layers of common use. Whether through writing it out, singing a song, or playing a game, each child's individual learning style affects how we can learn together.
I spent a year in Spain teaching English to elementary school students through games and interactive methods. Before I start tuoring a child, I like to get know them first. I think it's important to build trust with a child before jumping in and telling them what to do. A child will be more likely to accept help from someone they know rather than a total stanger. I like to make learning fun.
At Birmingham-Southern College, I was the News Editor for the college newspaper for two years. In addition, I have a minor in Journalism. Young children learn best through things that have meaning to them. For example, I once tutored a child that had difficulty learning his multiplication tables, but was an avid NASCAR fan. I taught him the sums of multiplication problems by using the numbers on the drivers cars. He learned that the sum of 6x4, and 4x6 was equal to Jeff Gordon's number, which was 24. We did that with every car in NASCAR and people were amazed at how quickly he learned his multiplication tables. Multiplication tables became a breeze to him. I have used similar principals teaching phonics, and reading to young children. I also, have a history of being patient and understanding with elementary aged children.
