I prepare for tutoring sessions by asking any prospective students to please send me their study material prior to our sessions (at least a day please!). This helps me evaluate what may be needed to master the material for their class and is just one of the ways that I cater to my students needs and prepare them for success. I am a firm believer in asking questions. Not only do I ask questions, but I also constantly encourage students to ask me questions as well. This helps me better gauge where they are struggling and where I need to assist most in fortifying their understanding. I am a recent graduate from UCSD that majored in Human Biology and Psychology. I prefer to approach every student very slowly in the beginning to understand exactly where their trouble are. Listening is the most important attribute that a tutor can have followed by patience. It's my job to identify where the student's problem are and address those problems. My experience has tought me that most people just need a new perspective to understand certain materials at hand. Providing applications for someone learning new concepts is key for their development because the student understands how the concepts they're learning applies in the real world. I started substitute teaching in 1983 while I was working on my Master's Degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have been a substitute teacher in Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Glendale, and Palm Springs. I have had experience as a long term substitute in Senior English for a year at Palm Springs High School, also in Palm Springs, I did six months as a Special Education teacher at Cree Middle School. While I was in Glendale, I worked a year at Allen Continuation High School teaching English and Social Studies.
