My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.

A Little Bit About Me...

I had an amazing biology teacher in high school who was upbeat, interactive and made learning, memorable and fun. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.

I graduated from Hampton University with a BS in Molecular Biology and my love for science pushed me to pursue a MS in Medical Science. I have tutored at Hampton University in the areas of Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Science, and General Biology. I have also taught at Thomas Nelson Community College in The Biological Sciences. I have been teaching sixth grade science for the last two years. My students have the highest scores in the school. Three out of four of my classes have at least a 92% pass rate for the city's benchmark test.
