During my time at Hocking Technical College, I was taking alot of biology related classes such as Botany, Ohio Trees, Aquatic Ecology and many other related classes. I was a tutor for 1 year, teaching students about learining there trees by showing them out in the field and also teaching them latin names for these specific trees. In addition, I tutored students in Aquatic Ecology and used mnemonic devices to aid in memorization of these concepts. While at Appalachian State Universtiy, I would often organize study groups and review concepts regarding geography skills in lab and also in the lecture. I graduated recently in Elementary education, so I have a broad knowledge in all subject areas. I got in the top 15th percentile on the Praxis content knowledge test. I am well-trained in different teaching techniques as well as Elementary content because I have substituted in classes from special education, to kindergarten, to sixth grade in small group and whole class. I have also tutored students in a college Biology class, one-on-one, and tutored friends when they needed it. I have also taught piano lessons for two years to various students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a degree in Physical Science Education, which gives me a strong background in Physical Sciences and in math. I have worked with children and youth of all age levels and nearly every ability. I ran an afterschool program for the Salvation Army, ran a boys home for troubled boys and worked in St. Paul City schools as a substitute teacher and a night teacher at an evening school. I also have worked six summers at a Salvation Army camp. Through these experiences I have worked with both gifted and special needs children and youth.

I find that students benefit greatly by becoming active participants in the teaching process. I try to develop a curriculum that students help determine, and create lessons that center around topics that interest the students and apply to their lives in a real and practical manner. I try to begin a dialogue with students whenever possible, but also try to know when students would benefit more from direct instruction from their teacher.

I became a teacher while still a student. Another student of painting approached my easel, asking me to teach her what I knew. I understood then, I was to share my knowledge, I was destined to become a Teacher of art, as well as a Painter.
