I enjoy teaching and help others learn the subjects of math, science and Spanish. Everyone is different and therefore everyone has a different style of learning. I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works. I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas. I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. My paid professional teaching experince includes one year working as a Special Education Paraprofessional for 2-4 grade stundents classified with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. My undergraduate degree from Valdosta State University was in music education. While some teachers favor a direct instruction approach, I try to tailor my instruction to the growing and diverse needs of each student. Some are more auditory learners than others, therefore, for those you would need a lot of teaching by rote, i.e "do as I do", so to speak.
