I went to Ohio State in Art, then graduated at Ohio U. I taught 14 years in Florida and Ohio , grades 1 through 12; all subjects. I taught using primarily Art and music. My areas of expertise are Reading, Literature, English, and the arts. I have acted in Little Theatre, choreographed, and taught Drama in High School and in College. I had just started tutoring at A to Z Tutoring in Florida but in 2007 I moved back to North Carolina. I substituted many years in North Carolina and taught in High School and some Elementary. I have always thought of myself as a progressive teacher. I always thought children could learn to do anything they were asked to do. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas. I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information.
