Learning is Always New

I've taught creative writing to Japanese university students in English only (songs, stories and poetry) for two years, and ESL to all ages in Japanese society for 22 years. In America, I taught freshman public speaking, composition, and literature at the university level. My students have gone on to top-level universities, and placed first in prefectural level speech competitions.
I teach how to learn, and encourage a love of learning, as well as teaching the subject. I base all my lessons on the value they allow the student to impart to society, both economically and ethically. I encourage students to welcome responsibility and empower themselves as learners.

Student-centered Tutor with lots of patience.

At this moment, I am a volunteer English/English as a Second Language Tutor at our community library. I tutor two elementary students in Reading and Writing two times a week. The younger student has a hard time focusing. I tried variety of things to help her. When we meet, I ask her first how was her day so I would know if she is tired or how long her attention span would be. After I try to ask her to read a small book that she picks. Then as she reads I try to assess her difficulty. I write down words she can’t read. When she is done, I ask her to write sentences or a story with the difficult words. Then she draws about it. The best successes come after their greatest disappointments

I have experience with pre k to 8th grade tutoring in Math and English tutoring to help students prepare for Iolani and Punahou entrance exams through Dr. Takahashi Juku. I have also worked extensively with children from Japan who struggle with English. I can explain English words and grammar in Japanese and well as read and write Japanese .
I like to make my tutoring sessions productive by encouraging students to work hard to complete the taste in order to receive a reward in the form of a game or something they enjoy doing. I am very thorough in correcting assignments and make sure they fully understand the concept they are working on. I am very helpful in stimulating critical thinking for creative writing assignments.

I love working with children and adults!

I am an informal teacher because I do not yet have the experience teaching in a formal setting accept for writing lesson plans for language arts. Otherwise, I am looking forward to working with adults and children on their studies because they need the help.
