My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : We have Certified Teachers and Degreed Tutors who specialize in each subject or grade level. Each Certified teacher has the ability and skills to individualize the teaching style, based on the child's learning style. My original degree was in English with a minor in Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 1979 in Secondary English/Spanish. I taught adult ESL part time for 2 years in the evenings. After a taste in this field, I began teaching in ESL and have taught 9 years in public schools. With one school district I also had a class helping students with the English part of the TAAS test. During the rest of my career I taught Spanish which was also 9 years.
I believe the first thing you need to do is to find out what the student needs help with. At times I have used music, poetry, or computer programs to get the students attention. I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself.
