My comments on tutoring Geography : For three summers, I taught geography to gifted middle school students for Johns Hopkins.

Students being tutored one-on-one deserve lessons customized to their learning style. My sessions often incorporate some writing and topic discussion along with activities tailored to the student's interests, skill development needs and preferences.
This is my fourth year tutoring middle and high school students in History and Government. I also have professional classroom teaching experience and volunteer elementary school teaching experience. My students, primarily Global History, World History and European History students, have raised their class grades, passed the Regents exam by many points and earned high scores on the AP. I specialize in both content acquisition and essay writing skills. Some students have worked with me for half a year or more, others for a month or two before cumulative exams.

I believe that successful teaching begins with engaging the student. If students are given what I call a "hook" something on which to secure new information, then learning can take place. This can be simply piquing the student's interest, building on past knowledge, posing a question or mystery to be solved, or some connection to the student's experiences. I also believe that successful teaching requires a teacher to establish some relationship with the student that allows the student to feel understood and respected. I make every effort to employ methods which acknowledge the student's own learning style, and I like the students to make their own discoveries and connections to the material while providing support and encouragement.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed teaching. It all began when I was really young and I would force my friends to play the students while I played the teacher. I cannot deny the fact that one of the reasons I love to teach is actually quite selfish. I definitely feel a great sense of satisfaction when a student completes a task to the best of their abilities, especially when I have helped them reached that goal. I like to be creative and use humor as my guide in teaching. I feel that comfort is most important in a learning environment and with my personality and my skills I can create such a place for your child. With everything that I have learned and everything that I have yet to learn, I think I can help your child meet his/her potential.

First and foremost I like to develop a camaraderie between myself and the student. A comfortable and pleasant atmospere is necessary to the student's learning experience. I am very personable and understanding which is important in developing a great working relationship with the student. I believe that repetition and emphasis of key terms and ideas are absolutely crucial in the learning process, especially in the teaching of foreign language. I always give a quick English grammar lesson before I teach the other language to refresh the student's memory and so they can make an insant connection. All students are capable of success with a good tutor by their side to encourage them and bring out the best in their abilities.
